Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine extends the individualized approach of acupuncture through carefully selected botanical formulas. Rather than choosing an herb solely because it is associated with a particular symptom, I consider patterns across the body and the relationships among symptoms, constitution, environment, and overall health.

Herbal formulas may contain individual herbs combined into a personalized formula or established traditional formulations selected and modified according to the patient's needs. Depending upon the clinical situation, herbal medicine may be used independently or alongside acupuncture.

Safety is especially important when combining herbs with conventional healthcare. A background in both Chinese medicine and contemporary clinical medicine allows particular attention to medications, potential herb–drug interactions, medical diagnoses, laboratory findings, and ongoing specialty treatment. Patients should continue medications prescribed by their healthcare professionals unless changes are made in consultation with the clinician responsible for prescribing them.

Herbal medicine can be considered for children and adolescents as well as adults. Pediatric treatment requires particular attention to age, weight, developmental stage, medications, and the child's underlying health. For those who cannot swallow pills, herbs can be taken in tea, tincture, or glycerite formulations.

For patients undergoing cancer treatment, transplantation, or other complex medical therapies, herbal medicine requires additional caution and I will ask for confirmation from your oncologist/transplanter before using these treatments. I do not use herbal medicine as an alternative cancer treatment, and any potential herbal therapy is considered in the context of the patient's oncology or specialty care.

Insurance & Reimbursement

I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance companies directly. After your visit, I can provide a superbill containing the information needed to submit a claim for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage and reimbursement vary by insurance plan, so I encourage patients and caregivers to contact their insurance company before beginning care to understand their out-of-network benefits, deductible, reimbursement rates, and any requirements for submitting claims.

Payment is due at the time of service, regardless of whether your insurance plan ultimately reimburses you for any portion of the cost.
